1st Grade

Welcome First Grade Parents:

Dear Grade 1 Parents and Students:

Welcome to science. The First Grade students have science once a week.

  • Class 1-218 on Friday
  • Class 1-219 on Thursday

Topic #1: Dissecting a dicot (bean) seed.

Topic #2: Living & Nonliving Things: We will review the way scientists sort all things.

Topic 3: Mealworms: We will observe and learn about the life cycle of a mealworm.

Topic 4: We will be once again working with the Canadian Space Agency on the Tomatosphere Investigation. Tomatosphere is helping astronauts and scientists prepare to travel and land on Mars. The astronauts will be gone 3 to 4 years! This is a very exciting investigation that will culminate in astronauts traveling safely to Mars.

This year we received one set of seeds that were kept for 34 days in a sealed environment. Those seeds were kept at a temperature of -800C is (-1120F) and without air. This is to simulate an accident to the storage area of the ship where the seeds are kept.   Will those seeds still be able to germinate and grow? The other set of seeds were kept in a normal Earth environment. This is called a Blind Test because we do not know which seeds were exposed to the space environment. We will send our results to the Canadian Space Agency before the December vacation. They will use our information along with many other schools to find out if astronauts can take and plant seeds when they travel to the planet Mars!   You can find more information at www.tomatosphere.org.

Topic 4: Science Fair: First Graders will work together as a class investigating a plant experiment. All Science Fair work will be done in my classroom later this year.

Parent Component on Tuesdays: I will send home a letter with a date for you to come to my room and see some of the activities I am doing with your child in science. It will take place about 2:45 to 3:20 on a designated Tuesday.

Contact information: If you have any questions or concerns, you can e-mail me at:

You can expect my response usually within 48 hours. You may also call the school. I am usually at school by 7:30 A.M.

Picture Permission: if you would like your child to be in any pictures during science, you will need to fill out and sign both sides of the permission forms. One side is for the garden grant. The other side would be for activities such as the Science Fair.

Working together, your child will excel in science.

Thank you very much for your help and support,

Mrs. Bosi
