Soil Testing Lab Report
I have changed the due date for the Fifth Grade Lab Report. The Fifth Grade Lab Report will be due the first week in February. Tentaively the due date will be Friday, February 3, 2012.
We are still testing and gathering information. Below is the checklist of what is expected in the lab Report. I am going over it in class with the children. They should have all the information in their notebooks. Please check back here for more information. If you have any questions, please contact me through my school e-mail: scifun205@gmail.com.
Below is a checklist to help you understand what to do.
#1: Your first & last name and your class must be on every page. Then skip a line.
#2: The Title of the Lab Report. Then skip a line.
#3: Problem: The question you are trying to solve-you copied it:
Problem: Does the soil at Alley Pond have a high nutrient level?
#4: Skip a line & do your Hypothesis. It must be at least two paragraphs long. Remember it does not matter if you guessed right or wrong, only if you explain your idea. Please do NOT change your original Prediction. A good Hypothesis says yes or no & restates the problem. It must tell why you think it will happen. The clearer your explanation the higher that grade.
Hypothesis: Yes (No), I think that the soil at Alley pond will/will not have a high level of nutrients. . I think this because…
#5: The Materials must be written down. Please write it the way I taught you.
Materials: Soil from Alley Pond Park, sieve, distilled water, plastic spoon, …..
#6: Procedure 1, 2 & 3. You copied it from the board. I hope you copied it correctly. Do NOT skip lines between the Steps. Skip a line between each Procedure. Remember Procedures 2 & 3 are only one sentence long. You will copy it from the board soon.
Procedure 1: Nitrogen Testing
Step 1: Obtain soil from Alley Pond park and allow to dry for several weeks
Step 2:
#7: Observations: Will include your observations from the testing. You will skip lines between the different days of Observations.
Observations: Date
#8: The Conclusion: This tells if your Hypothesis was right or wrong. Tells what actually did happen in the first paragraph. A very good Conclusion has a second paragraph telling what you learned and if this gives you ideas for other experiments and or if this information can be used by you or your family in any way.
Conclusion:
My Hypothesis was wrong (right). The soil at Alley pond park had a __ level of nutrients.
This is your first Lab Report this year. You may type it or hand write it. If you choose to hand write it, it must be in your neatest print. It must be done on loose leaf-not in your notebook. It needs to be neat-no rips or tears. You should be able to find all the parts in your notebook. Please let me know if you are missing something because you were absent.
I hope this helps. Happy Holidays,
Mrs. Bosi
