Dear Grade 4 Parent and Student:
Welcome to science. The Fourth Grade students have science twice a week.
- I will see both classes on Monday.
- Class 4-217 on Tuesday for a double Lab period.
- Class 4-216 on Wednesday for a double Lab period.
Topic #1: We started this year with dissecting a dicot (bean) seed.
Topic #2: We will be once again working with the Canadian Space Agency on the Tomatosphere Investigation. Tomatosphere is helping astronauts and scientists prepare to travel and land on Mars. The astronauts will be gone 3 to 4 years! This is a very exciting investigation that will culminate in astronauts travelling safely to Mars.
This year we received one set of seeds that were kept for 34 days in a sealed environment. Those seeds were kept at a temperature of -800C is (-1120F) and without air. This is to simulate an accident to the storage area of the ship where the seeds are kept. Will those seeds still be able to germinate and grow? The other set of seeds were kept in a normal Earth environment. This is called a Blind Test because we do not know which seeds were exposed to the space environment. We will send our results to the Canadian Space Agency before the December vacation. They will use our information along with many other schools to find out if astronauts can take and plant seeds when they travel to the planet Mars! Benchmark Science Assessment: The students will take an old state science test during the double lab period to help me determine the focus of our activities.
Class 4-217 will have the assessment on Tuesday, September 29.
Class 4-216 will have the assessment on Wednesday, September 30.
Science Workbooks: The students will receive their science workbooks along with the year’s assignments the week of October 5th after the assessment. Please help your child complete the short assignments on time. Students are encouraged to complete the assignments ahead of time.
Extra Credits: Children can do unassigned pages or vocabulary flash cards for Extra Credit. Students can also write about facts from a science book or science video for extra credit. Extra credit can raise a low grade.
Science Fair: All Science Fair work will be done in my classroom later this year.

Picture Permission: if you would like your child to be in any pictures during science, you will need to fill out and sign both sides of the permission forms. One side is for the garden grant. The other side would be for activities such as the Science Fair.
